The products that will be sold in this store are; ornaments but not limited to Christmas ornaments.

Envision of products;

· Personalized ornaments, such as organization’s logos, business’s logos, birthdays, weddings, anniversary, and other specials occasions

· Holiday ornaments, such as one of a kind hand made for all holidays

· Replacement ornaments, this store will provide services to located certain antique/retro ornaments to complete patron’s collections

· Also there will a space available for the patrons to design there own ornament

Merchandising:

This will use biodegradable materials such as paper mache with a filling to protect the ornaments after purchase. This paper mache cases will be neutral in color tied together using ribbon or twine.

Shipping crates will be available for large purchases, using pre-used wooden crates, also with biodegradable filling.

Some canvas totes with logo will be available for purchase.

Display:

As one of the premiere permanent stores in Bio-Mech Mills it is important that we preserve history, and our resources. This store will use mostly elements found in nature, such as an old tree as the main display unit that will hold the ornaments. Allowing these natural elements to be the backdrop of this store, will allow only the product brings in the colors like season change in nature. To display the ornaments there will be reused wooden crates that attach to the walls to hold ornaments, again with different fillings such as; cotton balls, shredded paper, saw dust and other natural materials. Also more tree parts located throughout the store, which will include tree trunks for seating, a wooden craft table & desk, & branch display units.

The purpose for my retail environment at BioMech Mills is to create a specialized ornament store that sells retro, new & personalized ornaments.

This store will makes sense at BioMech Mills because it brings the old and new together and creating a space that is personalized.
This store will appeal to lots of consumers, particularly families (moms, dads, & grandparents) those who would like to remember special occasions or replace those that have be lost or destroyed.
This store is unique because it marries the old & the new, this store will be to ornaments as Replacement Limited are to china & flatware.
Some preliminary ideas of displaying this ornaments will be to use old tree branches, limbs, & crates with different protective filling like sawdust, cotton balls, shreaded paper, etc.. to change the ornaments to match seasons, holiday,etc...

After our visit to meet Michelle at Anthropologie , I took away more understanding in retail design. I found it very interesting how stores set up their merchandise to increase sales of a particular product. Also I was impressed at the freedom each store has to design there own space.

This advertisement is effective because it gives us a sense of tranquility and peacefulness; this connects the viewer to nature. This leads the viewer to believe that the product being advertised which is solid surface by LG’s Eden Collection, must be a sustainable product. The design of the product is altered in a way to fit within the background scene. This ad has some contrast but a lot more blending of colors to make the product belong. I feel like this is an effective ad because it makes the viewer want to float on one of the lily pads and enjoy the nature around.

Response to Computing in Architectural Design

Computers today are in everything that we use that makes our live more convenient. The days of doing manual labor is rapidly coming to an end with computers taking over those tasks. Computers have infiltrated some of the most mundane aspects of our lives from regulating home temperatures to toasting bread and instead of writing letters and mailing them we e-mail, we no longer wait to get home to call friend, and we have cell phones. These advances in technology continually reduce the need for manual labor in a sense. It is true that computers have made our lives more convenient, not only for personal things but business world as well.

In the case with design there has always been a struggle to design buildings that are produced accurately and in a faster manner. Since design started that has always been a concern with calculating spaces to make the symmetric and in some aspects structurally sound. Early designers used geometric shapes to calculated spaces, by means of the square and circle. These geometric shapes aided in mapping out plans and balancing the space. As time passed on more inventions were used in producing more accurate plans helping to reduce the time spent by a designer calculating heavy mathematical equations. But nothing has help designers fabricate their plans faster are more accurate than the invention of CAD or Computer Aided Design.

CAD over the years have been revamped over and over to develop faster more precise was of designing spaces, computers, automobiles, airplanes, etc… Without the use of CAD designers may take a year developing plans by hand that would be have an excess of human error. Also in correcting these plans drafted by hand would be time consuming as well. CAD has eased the life of designers in professions from, mechanical, armed forces, computer technology, automotive, architecture and so on. With these programs designs are precisely and is quickly fabricated freeing up some time in construction documents to focus more time in construction. The use of CAD also allows the designer to make quick changes to the plan with out starting the plan completely over this also reduce cost for clients. CAD has allowed designers to expedite accurate plans to clients/builders, but it also has it limitations.

Although CAD has convenience design it has limited designers to think out of the box. CAD has a tendency to keep designers using linear forms more that organic shapes. It also has yet developed a way of producing/ learning ways to design a full building. As new versions of CAD are release design large buildings will become simple imputes in the computer with some manipulations.

Moments with loewenstein

The concept of the “Close to Home” installation was to display moments of Edward Loewenstein’s architectural forms/designs through-out Greensboro. The exhibit was placed in the Gatewood gallery space, displaying Loewenstein’s designs on structures produced out of wood, metal rods, and metal mesh panels.
These materials were often used by Loewenstein himself, where he specialized in meshing natural material and organic shapes with, man-made material and geometric shapes. These shapes were also reproduced in the exhibit with the angled beams that connected the display walls. Also used in the installation was the use of colors, wood was stained in colors that consisted of a chocolate brown, orange and a mint green, and the natural steal gray as another color. These color choices represented some of Loewenstein’s designs where he introduced nature into his spaces with unpainted woods, field stone, large open space to the outdoors. The installers also use a change in colors in areas where you should focus on more with the use of the chocolate brown stain. Images posted to the display wall supported the concept by displaying moments in Loewenstein’s designs, and personal/professional information. Another moment that I appreciated was the side notes on the installation process. The different types of media work with display board to computers to the 3D images. One moment that I felt that wasn’t as effective was the 3D walk through projection, because I felt it moved to fast throughout the space. The Gatewood gallery space is a large space with high ceilings, with this three dimensional installation it close in the space making it more intimate for a visitor walking through the space.

Popped Corn's design for My Sister's House is a coherent design based on the precedents of current womens homes focusing on public and private spaces which are breaking out of the box; the main thread of our decade of the 70s.

Popped Corn used the charrettes to explore the different ways to open up the proposed building "My Sister's House". First by producing a space planning model that had too many closed off areas. Then by doing a push and pull layout to open the space further, under the influence of Architect Philip Johnson. We will further explore more techiniques to provide more irregularity of the pushing and pulling to open the floor plan up.
